  10.    Like anybody waking up, it is
  11. hungry. But the computer hungers
  12. for more information. It checks to
  13. see if a bootable disk is in drive
  14. A:.  If not, it looks for a hard
  15. disk with system files.
  16.    A bootable disk is one that
  17. contains "system files." These
  18. three are MSDOS.SYS, IO.SYS and
  19. COMMAND.COM.  You might have seen
  20. COMMAND.COM on some of your
  21. floppies, but the other two are
  22. usually hidden on a bootable disk.
  23. They are there, but you don't see
  24. them when you type "dir."
  25.    The computer then reads these
  26. three files.  They tell it all
  27. about becoming a real computer.
  28. Once it reads these files, it
  29. knows how to run programs.
  30.    Just like when you read a
  31. book, the computer puts this
  32. information in short-term
  33. memory. On a computer, this is
  34. the RAM. These are several I.C.
  35. chips that can hold hundreds of
  36. thousands of individual bytes.

  39.    Next, the computer will look for
  40. files called AUTOEXEC.BAT and
  41. CONFIG.SYS on the bootable disk.
  42. These are special files in which
  43. the user can write instructions to
  44. tell the computer to automatically
  45. load chosen programs.  If no AUTO-
  46. EXEC.BAT file is found, the computer
  47. asks about the date and time.
  48.     The computer has several timing
  49. crystals which keep its thinking
  50. organized. One is also used to keep
  51. track of the time and date.  Many
  52. computers also have a small
  53. rechargeable battery and an IC chip
  54. that keeps track of the time even
  55. when the main power switch is
  56. turned off.  This small part of the
  57. computer is always awake.
  58.    The timing crystal emits an
  59. electronic tick, tick, tick at a
  60. very high rate of speed. The timing
  61. chip adds these ticks to the time
  62. and date.  The battery keeps this
  63. going. Whenever the computer is
  64. turned on, the battery is recharged.
